SC Surf Team

This year with many returning members of the Triton squad, the competition was fierce to make the squad. Not only were they being judged on there surfing but also there maturity, attitudes and desire to be out there. We had a few close calls that I know with one year of growth those surfers will come back hungrier and stronger ready to compete. I also have to take into account how the surfers will mesh with the returning surfers and if they are team oriented as well as personally driven. This is always a tough decision and one that I don’t take lightly.

Congratulations to all those that made the team. See you in the water very soon!

Tryouts will start next Monday morning! We will run both the bodyboarding and longboarding tryouts on Monday. The tryout heats will start at 7am at T-street.!
Tuesday morning will be Girls shortboard and girls longboard tryouts! These heats will be at the San Clemente pier starting at 6:45am!
Wednesday morning will be the Men’s shortboard heats. The location is still undetermined for Wednesday, it will depend on the surf.

Make sure you have your athletic clearance done!!! You can’t tryout without one, district policy!

Our Team Capitan’s for the year are:

Jeremy Carter, Tanner Rozunko, Collin Goddard, Eli Gillis and Emmy Merrill.

An explanation for the difference between the “A” team, the seniors and the developmental “JV” squads.  The “A” team are going to be my go to surfers during the league season.  Leaving 3 spots open every event to be filled by the seniors as well as a few of the developmental surfers.  Each one of you will be competing for a spot to surf in our League meets.  During the second half of the season in NSSA and SSS seniors can’t surf on the second team so it will be the guys on the developmental squad competing.  Seeing there progression over the last year I’m excited to see where they are going. 

Everyone is surfing at such a high level Men and Women, I’m excited to see where this season will take us.  Lot’s of work ahead, but I know everyone will be successful!

Don’t get complacent now that you are on the team, keep working every day to get better and improve yourself in and out of the water in the competion arena and the classroom.

Surf Team Tryouts will begin on September 20th at T-street starting at 630 am!

Surf Team Tryout meeting will be this coming Tuesday 9/13/2010 during lunch on the pool deck.

You must have your athletic clearance complete and turned in to the Athletic office before trying out.  No physical you can’t compete for a spot on the team.

What a month for San Clemente surfers!  Started out with Nate Yeomans scoring huge in Santa Cruz and booking his ticket to the ‘CT.  Pat Guadauskas was sitting at number 2 in the ratings and was feeling great.  It was Tanner Gudauskas going into the Hawaii season needing 2 results to make the ‘CT.  He went out and got them and now sits at #11 and will be joining Pat and Nate on the ‘CT. 

The big news is Greg Long!  The storm of the season was approaching the Hawaiian islands and the Eddie Aikua was going to run.  He got a few warm-up days and then the bay called the day Tuesday December 8th, 2010.  The first heat didn’t go so well and Kelly Slater was leading, then Greg paddled out for his second heat of the day needing 4 solid scores.  He got them, including one of 3 perfect 100 scores ever seen in the history of the Eddie!  Congrats Greg!  So stoked for you!

This morning at T-street the San Clemente Tritons and Newport Harbor Sailor’s met for the second time this season in a match-up that would help determine the Leage Champions.  The last match was won by the Sailor’s 94-74 up in Newport. There was plenty of swell on tap for the competition with the best surf showing up in the Men’s longboard heat.  In that heat the Triton surfers, Nick Hagen, Dennis White and Eli Gillis recorded the only clean sweep of the morning.  The rest of the Tritons also dominated by winning every heat.  The Tritons had a commanding lead half way through and never looked back.  The final score San Clemente 103 Newport Harbor 65.  It was a great team victory by everyone!  Up next for the Triton’s, a contest against Aliso on Friday and then the League Individuals next week at Upper Trestles.

We had a great win this morning against Laguna Beach High School in 1-2 foot wedgy salt creek.  Everyone surfed well with focus determination.

Heats will start at 6:30am!  We will have our team meeting before the first heat of the morning.  Everyone needs to be down there by 630am.  Dress warm it is going to be cold down there!

FYI Laguna beat Newport last week and will be very fired up for San Clemente with a lot of confidence.  This also means we still have a shot of winning the League Title!
